Gluten-Free Always-Great Crispy Onion Rings (Shhhhh! Secrets! with Vegan Option)

Always-Great Crispy Onion Rings (Shhhhh! Secrets!)

We all know onion rings taste best when crispy. Yes, they really, really do! And it seems like fry cooks all have their secret ways for making their onions rings extra special crispy. We sure do.
Call us crazy, but in a moment of weakness we decided to share our secrets for making Always-Great Crispy Onion Rings. First secret? This recipe uses our Inspiration Bakery and Mixes Batter Mix.
Pro tips: if you deep-fat or pan fry your onion rings, once you remove them from the oil. place them on a paper towel to drain. Do this because the oil actually reabsorbs into the batter and, if it does, the reabsorbed oil makes the onion rings soggy. And, although you do want to get the oil off, as soon as they have drained, you should put them in a pan with its own oven-safe rack in the oven to keep them crisp. You'll see this tip repeated as a part of our instructions below.
We use our Batter Mix to make lots of other Crispy Batter-Fried Goodies (we share those secrets elsewhere under this recipes tab).
It's also easy to make this recipe vegan and that option is shown in the instructions below. Always Gluten-Free!

Servings 20 1-Inch Onion Rings

Equipment

  • Stove with Oven
  • Fry Pan, Deep Fat Fryer, Air Fryer
  • Mixing Bowl (large)
  • Wire Whisk
  • Tongs
  • Slotted Spoon (large)
  • Paper Towels
  • Pan with Integral Oven-Safe Rack

Ingredients

  • 1 Quart Oil (for frying) if using deep-fryer, follow manufacturer instructions
  • 2-3 White Onions (large)
  • 1 Cup Inspiration Bakery and Mixes Batter Mix
  • 1 Cup Water, Gluten-Free Beer, or Club Soda
  • 1 Egg (large) for crispier batter
  • 1/2 Cup Gluten-Free Bread Crumbs

Instructions

Oven Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 200° F to keep the prepared onion rings warm until served.

Onion Preparation

  • Slice large white onions into at least 1-inch slices. 1 1/2 inch slices are even better. Separate the smaller "inside" onion rings to use in other recipes. Large onion rings are the best for this recipe.
  • Freeze onion rings in a one-gallon freezer bag for at least one hour before cooking. Onions will remain good while frozen for up to 30 days.
  • When ready to use, remove the onion rings from freezer and place in a bowl. Run tepid water over the top of them until they are thawed.
  • Place thawed onion rounds onto paper towels until completely dry, which takes about 10 minutes.
  • Remove inside membrane from each onion ring. Rings will be floppy.

Batter Preparation

  • In a large bowl, add 1 cup of liquid to 1 cup of Inspiration Bakery and Mixes Batter Mix. Add an egg if you want crispier batter. Vegan Option: omit the egg and use club soda instead of beer or water.
  • Mix your batter well with a wire whisk.

Frying

  • Prepare your oil for frying. Follow your deep-fat fryer instructions or, if you are using a frying pan, set temp at 375° F or medium-high heat on your stove top. If you are using an air-fryer, follow the instructions.
  • If you are adding gluten-free bread crumbs for extra texture, put them into the batter mix now just before you start dipping your onion rings.
  • Place an onion ring carefully into the batter until completely covered. Remove and shake off any excess. Repeat with each additional onion ring. Note: too much batter will cause the onion rings to become soggy, so a light coating is what you want.
  • Fill the hot frying pan or deep-fryer with the batter rings so that the rings don't touch. Using your slotted spoon or tongs, flip your onion rings after 2 minutes, and fry for another 2 minutes.
Fry time can vary. If you have a thermometer, you will want to use it to keep the oil temperature at 375° F. If you don't have a thermometer, you will want to watch how fast your onion tings brown. Don't burn them. Times may also vary if you use a deep-fat fryer depending on its fry temperature, too..
  • Place your your Always-Great Crispy Onion Rings onto a paper towel for a short time to let the oil run off. Right away put them on your oven-safe wire rack in a pan and put the pan in your pre-heated oven to keep them warm until all have been cooked.
  • Repeat the frying steps until all of your onion rings are done. Serve plain or with dipping sauces! Yummm! Now you know our secrets!
